Every year, in mid-July, a party is organised in the neighbourhood where Antonio Alessandra was born. According to an old saying, this is considered the hottest time of the year in town.
As a child, he went with his father to the market early in the morning on the day of the festival to buy flowers. Then at home we would cut the stems and store the flowers in a small room. In the late afternoon, when the festive procession was in the street, they sacrificed the flowers and threw them from the balcony. Many guests came home to attend the feast and they were welcomed with a refreshing glass of almond milk. Late in the evening, they waited for the last fireworks.
The pungent smell of fireworks mingled with the smell of flowers that were kept in the shade while the sun burned outside.
